The Best Home Air Purifier for Asthma, Allergies, and the Dreaded Utah Inversion

Pretty much everyone in my house has allergies of one sort or another.

My husband has fairly severe seasonal allergies, and I blame him for passing on the allergy genes to our sons. Our middle son is allergic to almost every plant known to man. We also found out just a few months ago that our oldest also has moderate asthma.

*SIGH*

And, we live in the beautiful mountains of Utah, where occasionally the radiant snow-capped mountains are rendered invisible by a thick layer of what we locals call “inversion”.  Inversion is a reversal of the normal decrease of air temperature with altitude. Instead of cooling with the increase of altitude, it warms. This traps the cold air in the valleys. It also traps all sorts of pollutants which give us a smog thick enough to rival some of the dirtiest cities. Yuck!

Utah Winter Inversion Levels

This is a screen capture from an inversion day a couple weeks ago. The “X”s mean we are under “mandatory burn ban” and can’t have fires in our fireplaces (pretty common during the winter here). During inversion days kids are not allowed to play outside at school (or at home if you live at my house). Indeed, the air can be very dangerous for my oldest son’s asthma.

LG PuriCare Air Purifier Review

Fortunately, RC Willey recently sent the LG PuriCare Air Purifier (model AS401VSA0) to review.

The LG PuriCare Air Purifier is the Cadillac of air purifiers. After independent testing in accredited laboratories, LG PuriCare™ Air Purifiers have been certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. That means they are scientifically proven to be better suited for the 1 out of 5 Americans with asthma and allergies.

LG PuriCare Air Purifier Features:

  • 3 stage filter system captures 99.97% of airborne allergens like dust, dander, mold, and pollen–to name just a few–as small as 3 microns.
  • Reduces odors and VOCs.
  • Decibel levels: 23 (Low speed) / 47 (High) / 51 (Turbo)
  • LED lighting system displays 4 different colors to show indoor air pollution level (Green, yellow, orange, red).
  • Digital display indicator provides real-time measurement of indoor concentration levels of airborne particulates at 3 levels of particle sizes (1Um, 2.5Um, 10Um).
  • Designed for rooms up to 248 sq ft.
  • Filters are color coded and easy to replace.
  • Features a timer and a child-lock.

My favorite things about the LG PuriCare Air Purifier.

The prefilter is washable! Do you know how exciting this is?! The most annoying thing about many air purifiers is that you have to replace the prefilter every 3-6 months. With the LG Puricare Air Purifier you only need to replace the other two filters once a year and then wash the prefilter when needed.

I love the “Auto” setting! We generally run the Air Purifier on Auto. This means that often when we turn the air purifier on it will ramp up to high speed for about 2-5 minutes until it has filtered out much of the air in the room. Then, it automatically turns itself to low speed to maintain the clean air. The settings are intuitive and extremely easy to set if you prefer to manually control your air purifier settings.

At low speed, the volume “just above a whisper”. Honestly, at low speed, I can’t even hear it unless I’m within a couple feet of the air purifier. Maybe, in my mid-30’s old age, my hearing is starting to go. But I really love that this cleans our air so efficiently without adding any noise to my already exuberant house.

I’m still giddy that this actually measures your air quality. When I ran the air purifier in the front room that we don’t use very often that the LG PuriCare Air Purifier light ran green and the air quality was actually pretty good. However, when we transferred the air purifier up to my boys’ room (the two with the allergies and asthma), the air quality was much lower. The light on the front of the purifier ran orange, and the levels of contaminates at all particulate sizes were much higher. Needless to say, we’ll be keeping the air purifier in their bedroom for a while.

There’s even an air quality guide on the side of the air purifier to let you know what levels are healthy and what is unhealthy.

Final thoughts on the LG PuriCare Air Purifier

Whether you live in a place with extreme air pollution, suffer from seasonal allergies, want to filter our indoor pollutants from cigarette smoke, dust, pet dander, etc., the LG PuriCare is a great option. Not only does it clean your air, but it can help you understand what type of particulates are commonly polluting the air in your home.

The LG PuriCare Air Purifier retails for $349.99.
