Summer is finally here and the task has fallen upon you to organize your family vacation, with all the tribulations that it brings! You like a good old fashioned road trip, but the kids aren’t up for all that time in the car. Why not try something a little different and broaden your horizons? Venture out into Europe and the beautiful Portuguese Algarve. Thousands of Europeans flock to this destination each summer. Here are some of the fun family activities you can do while you’re there.
Pirate cruise
What can be more exhilarating for kids than the adventure of going on a pirate-style ship? Pirate ship cruises leave from the marina of Albufeira and set sail into the Atlantic, westward bound for beaches like those of San Rafael, Castelo, Praia da Gale, Marina and Benagil.
Some will give you the opportunity to visit the caves or do some fishing; both will allow you to see the dolphins, which have been known to swim right up to the ship to say hello!
Adventure in Lagos
Come to Lagos, in the western Algarve, with the kids and the family will truly learn the meaning of adventure. The Slide and Splash water park is a mere 20 minutes from Lagos, or you can explore the ocean with a spot of sea kayaking.
Dry land offers just as many activities. This part of the Algarve is a good spot for mountain biking, or kids can pit their wits against their parents on the nearby go karting track. Maybe mom and daughter aren’t into that so much. You can balance things out with a gentler activity such as isn’t so much into that if you want something a little gentler there are horse riding opportunities around the area.
Enjoying wildlife
The ZooMarine Park, in Guia, just outside of Albufeira, provides families with an avenue to appreciate wildlife. You’ll get to see dolphins, seals and sea lions, but the park doesn’t just stop at that. While there, visitors can also admire the birds of prey and some of the tropical wildlife. In between theme parks you might want to make the most of some of the theme park attractions, such as the white water rapids or the Buffalo mini roller coaster. Remember to raise those hands in the air!
This being the Algarve, you can be sure of some comfortable accommodation. Companies like Villa Plus offer pleasant Algarve villa holidays that allow you to make the most of your place in the sun. You can bask in the heat on the beach by day and cool in the villa pool by night. That sounds like bliss!
