Sugar Body Scrubs seem to be all the rage on Pinterest. I saw this awesome looking sugar and coconut oil scrub once. I immediately whipped up a batch of coconut oil sugar scrub only to discover my body really didn’t like having thousands of tiny razor-sharp sugar granules rubbed all over it.
Later, a friend (who has the most gorgeous skin!) recommended using a baking soda and vodka mixture. This friend is an Aussie, a beach bum, and spends her life in the sun. And yet, her skin is beautiful. I decided a fusion of the two scrubs would be amazing!
This skin detox body scrub is great for several reasons. The vodka is a great cleanser. –Honestly, I’ve never drank the stuff, and I don’t know how people can. It smells just like rubbing alcohol!– The skin detox body scrub pulls impurities, toxins from the environment, and built-up excess oils from your skin. The baking soda gives you a deep clean (almost like a nice microdermabrasion). The result is incredibly clean, smooth skin and smaller pores.
I want to note that this is a Skin Detox Body Scrub. Just like you wouldn’t do any internal detox body remedy all the time, I wouldn’t recommend using this boxy scrub daily. I’ve heard it recommended by others to use this scrub twice a week for about 2 weeks and then about once every week or every other after that as maintenance.
Making the Skin Detox Body Scrub is so easy!
Here is what you’ll need:
- Vodka — Should be at least triple distilled. You’re not going to need much so buy the smallest bottle you can find.
- Coconut Oil — Can be refined or unrefined.
- Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
- Small Jar
First…
Fill the jar all the way full with baking soda. It will settle quite a bit when you add the vodka so don’t be shy about filling it all the way up (with baking soda).
Next,
Pour vodka in small amounts into the jar. Stir in between each pour. Add enough vodka so that the texture of the vodka/baking soda mixture becomes putty-like.
Finally,
Add 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil and stir.
And, that, my friends is it! Feel free to add a few drops of your favorite essential oil or just a tiny bit of vanilla!
I found after a couple uses during the winter that the mixture of just baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vodka left my skin a little too dry. So I decided to add a little coconut oil. I didn’t want to loose any of the cleansing effect so I added just enough to help my body retain a little of it’s moisture without making it retain any of its dirt and toxins.
*One thing to note: Because this has alcohol in it, if you have cracked skin or an open wound, it will sting. You may just decide it is better to wait to use until your skin is healed. 🙂
I absolutely love how soft my skin is (especially my face!!!) is after I use this skin detox body scrub! It feels so clean! The baking soda is so much gentler on my skin than the sugar, and the coconut oil gives just the right amount of moisture!
