Baby It’s Cold Outside!

Seriously, even here in Louisiana it has been c.o.l.d. the past few days. We run the heater in our house throughout the day, but there are two rooms in the house that stay pretty frigid.  My bedroom and my bathroom. I am seriously going to miss the bathroom heater fan when we move to a new house. Whoever invented that thing is a genius! It is a bathroom fan–the kind that you turn on to keep your bathroom from steaming up during your shower–that has a separate switch for heat. One of the best inventions ever.

So that solves the frigid bathroom problem, but the bedroom…The Husband and I have nothing on the massive window that graciously lets out all the heat and generously lets in all the cold air. I’m all for generosity, but that is going too far.

The easiest and most economical solution to our chilly problem is a portable space heater. Thankfully, NewAir sent us their new NewAir AH-450B Electric Oil-filled Radiator Space Heater to review.

NewAir AH-450B Electric Oil-filled Radiator Space Heater

It immediately brought me back to my newly married days. My husband and I lived in a turn of the century 4-plex. There was no central heating or air conditioning. Our tiny apartment was “heated” by a couple water-filled coil radiators. I put heated in ” ” because the heat was controlled by out oft-absent upstairs neighbors, frequently leaving us to enjoy 55 degree temperatures in our apartment.

Reminiscing aside, the NewAir AH-450B Space Heater is a great new take on an old concept.

Here’s a brief overview of how an oil-filled radiator works:

  1. Electricity is channeled into a resistor inside the heater, which turns the energy into heat.
  2. That heat is absorbed by the diathermic oil that is enclosed in the heater.
  3. As the oil in the heater warms up, it begins to circulate through the fins and columns.
  4. As the oil moves, it transfers heat into the metal of the heater’s fins, creating an even surface temperature.
  5. As the metal fins heat up, they begin to radiate heat into the room. This heat is circulated throughout the room by natural convection in the air.

Our NewAir Electric Oil-filled Radiator is very efficient at heating our bedroom.  It takes about 5 minutes to really get warm, but by about 20 minutes our entire bedroom is well heated. One thing to keep in mind is that the radiator will continue to radiate heat for several minutes after it is turned off as the oil cools down.

One question I had when we first got this was, “Do you have to refill the oil in oil-filled radiators?”  The answer, my friends, is no. The oil in the radiator just serves as a heat reservoir and never gets used up.

Pros of the NewAir AH-450B Electric Oil-filled Radiator Space Heater:

  • It is so quiet!!! Because there is no fan the only thing you’ll hear as this heats up your space to your desired temperature is an occasional “crackle” of oil.
  • It won’t dry out your skin or your air. If you’re prone to dry skin you’ll love this space heater. And, can I get a “Hurrah! For no more static shocks!”
  • Non-scorching surfaces. The metal surfaces get warm to the touch, but never hot enough to burn if brushed against accidentally.
  • Energy efficient. Electric heaters are almost 100% efficient, which means that all the energy used is converted directly to heat. An oil-filled heater doesn’t even have to provide power for a fan motor.
  • Thermostat controlled. Once the area or room reaches a comfortable temperature, oil-filled heaters will automatically cycle on and off to maintain that warmth, instead of running continuously, saving you money while preventing overheated rooms.
  • Comes with a remote so you don’t even have to get out of bed or up off the couch to turn off the heater.

  1. 7 fin radiator design quickly warms any small room (up to 300 square feet).
  2. Compact design fits into small spaces.
  3. Cord wrap keeps the cord out of the way when storing.
  4. Castors on the front and back end make for easy portability on carpet and hard surfaces.
  5. LED controls and a programmable electronic thermostat that monitors your space’s temperature. This helps to conserve even more energy and ensures that you have the perfect temperature at all times.

All in all I couldn’t be happier with this space heater! It does the job efficiently, effectively, and quietly.

I love NewAir products but haven't purchased a heater from them. I would love to take the one I bought from another company and try this one.
  2. Nice product I've been eyeing this product for quite some time, but still unsure if I want to buy it. After getting some pretty good reviews from you, I'm totally considering Getting this one. Hopefully my wife would appreciate this as I'm planning to send this over to Canada. Again, thanks for this review!
