You know a baby gear item is great when it gets consistently used with multiple children. I received a Bumbo Floor Seat as a baby shower gift with my first son almost six years ago. He used it for several months. When my second son came along we got the Bumbo out of storage. It got several more months of use before it went back into storage to await the next baby.
Big Brother on the left and Little Brother on the right.
I’ve loved using the Bumbo Floor Seat for our boys because not only does it allow them to sit up and enjoy a different view of their world, it also helps them develop neck and back muscle for better control and support of their bodies. I liked to use the Bumbo in place of tummy time for Little Brother who thought that tummy time=nap time. Here is what Bumbo has to say about its benefits:
The floor seat stabilizes the child into slight hip flexion, placing the pelvis in a slight anterior pelvic tilt which facilitates lumbar extension. This action, combined with the gentle curve of the seat back that matches the natural curve of the rib cage, facilitates the baby around the lower ribs and trunk for stabilization. The Seat allows for active practice of the head and postural trunk control. It also allows a child the pelvic stability needed to get the hands into the mid line for play. Upright positioning facilitates an improved visual field of the environment, improved respirations and breath control, assists a baby who needs to be upright after feeding due to reflux and many other benefits.
Now, I wouldn’t really say that the Bumbo has helped our children with their reflux issues. Both Little Brother and Baby Brother had/have reflux. I have not been able to get any pictures of Baby Brother sitting in the new Bumbo sent us to review because as soon as I sit him up in it he spits up quite a bit. Little Brother was the same way. When he was about 3 1/2 months he was finally able to sit in his Bumbo without spitting up. I just had to make sure that it had been at least an hour since he ate before I put him in it. Hopefully, in a few more weeks Baby Brother will be able to go in the Bumbo
As our boys got older the Bumbo Floor Seat served several purposes. When the boys got tired of playing on their play mats I could sit them up in the Bumbo with a toy to play with. If I were sitting on the floor folding laundry they enjoyed sitting right next to me in the Bumbo where they could interact with me. When it came time to introduce solid foods the Bumbo made a good seat for our boys who weren’t quite sturdy enough for the booster seat/high chair we have (yes, we fed the boys on our living room floor. LOL).
Since we received our first Bumbo six years ago, Bumbo has updated their floor seats with a three point seat belt. It is important to note that you should always have the Bumbo on the floor, thus the name “Bumbo Floor Seat”, with your child buckled. Even when your child is buckled you should always remain within arms reach.
The Bumbo Floor Seat and its accessories can be purchased online or in stores for $44.99 (MSRP).
