When I was a kid my family took regular vacations. We most often went to visit my mom’s family in Fort Worth, Texas. We lived in San Diego, California. It is a 22 to 24 hour drive from one point to the other. With 10 kids my parents didn’t even think about flying. Nope, driving was what we always did.
Amidst all the fighting and bickering we did manage to create some wonderful memories. Here are my top 5 “Remember that one time”s from my family road trips as a kid:
- Remember that one time when, after driving past the billboards on countless roadtrips to and from Texas, we finally convinced mom to stop at “The Thing!”. It must not have been too impressive because I can no longer remember what we found there. But I still remember the victory we felt when we convinced my mom to stop.
- Remember that one time when we stopped at Carlsbad Caverns with Mom and Grandma. We watched a little comedy show and the next morning went on a tour of the caverns.
- Remember that one time when we were driving through the Mojave desert and our 15 passenger van overheated. Yeah, that was pretty fun driving through the scorching desert in a van where only 2 windows roll down.
- Remember that one time when we discovered the best jalapeño cheese bread, at a gas station no less. Yeah, that was a great refresher after the scorching Mojave.
- Remember that one time when we were driving along in Lake Havasu City and we realized we’d left my little sister at K-Mart. The oddly quiet car tipped us off.
What has been your favorite road trip memory?
