When I was a kid my family took regular vacations.  We most often went to visit my mom’s family in Fort Worth, Texas.  We lived in San Diego, California.  It is a 22 to 24 hour drive from one point to the other.  With 10 kids my parents didn’t even think about flying.  Nope, driving was what we always did.

Amidst all the fighting and bickering we did manage to create some wonderful memories.  Here are my top 5 “Remember that one time”s from my family road trips as a kid:

  1. Remember that one time when, after driving past the billboards on countless roadtrips to and from Texas, we finally convinced mom to stop at “The Thing!”.  It must not have been too impressive because I can no longer remember what we found there.  But I still remember the victory we felt when we convinced my mom to stop.
  2. Remember that one time when we stopped at Carlsbad Caverns with Mom and Grandma.  We watched a little comedy show and the next morning went on a tour of the caverns.
  3. Remember that one time when we were driving through the Mojave desert and our 15 passenger van overheated.  Yeah, that was pretty fun driving through the scorching desert in a van where only 2 windows roll down.
  4. Remember that one time when we discovered the best jalapeño cheese bread, at a gas station no less.  Yeah, that was a great refresher after the scorching Mojave.
  5. Remember that one time when we were driving along in Lake Havasu City and we realized we’d left my little sister at K-Mart.  The oddly quiet car tipped us off.
Now, even those times that were not quite so fun, have turned into great memories.  I’m hoping that when my own boys look back on the road trips we’ve taken and will take they too will remember them with fondness.
Of course, cars now a days have so many more amenities than they used to.  When going on a road trip with our boys we don’t leave the driveway without the DVD player.  The Husband and I have have our iPod and iPhones to listen to audiobooks. Given that we take a 4 hour trip about once a month these amenities are greatly appreciated!

We used to take road trips when I was a kid. Lots of good memories.
  2. Haha, I still remember being left at K-Mart, I was just so focused on those huge easter baskets that I didn't even notice everyone else leaving. It's just funny how times change... I remember trying to get mom to NOT to stop that The Thing.
  3. I love taking road trips, especially down to Key West - it's always so much fun!
  4. Those sound like some amazing memories! Overheating in the desert sounds like quite a story and I could go for some jalapeno cheese bread right now. My family loves road trips and we have some really amazing memories from them.
  5. I remember being in the station wagon with my brother and sister and driving for what seemed forever to see my grandfather. Looking back, it was only 1hour and 45 minute ride. lol
  6. great tips! ps. i have a Kia and LOVE it!!!

I have fond memories of vacation road trips too. Six kids in the station wagon and we all wanted a window seat! Played lots of games like the alphabet hunt, those dairy queens always came in handy for that one.
    • Haha! We were the same...station wagon and all! We would often drive from southern California to Las Vegas. We'd always hope we were lucky enough to be nearing the end of the alphabet when we passed the signs for Zzyzx.

I loved reading your family road trips memories as a kid. I have so many myself, we always took road trips to STL to visit my Uncle and Aunt. Even the small stops on the way at random little convenience stores was memorable. The last one your mentioned about leaving your little sister at Kmart, the same senario happened to us, but once we headed back to get her she never even knew she got left, she was in the toy department the whole time. lol
