One gift that will satisfy just about every member of the family is a portable DVD player.  Kids, teens, and grownups alike find that a portable DVD player is an essential item to keep on hand.

We frequently take road trips to visit family.  Our portable DVD player is the #1 item that has helped The Husband and I keep our sanity during those road trips.  We actually just returned from a road trip to Arlington, TX today.

On the road we had the opportunity to try out the Audiovox DS9341 9 inch swivel screen portable DVD player.  Because this DVD player doesn’t come with a headrest mount we simply tied it to the back of the front passenger headrest with a band of elastic.  (We have another portable DVD player we’ve been using for years that we rig up in the same fashion—it works great!)

Here are some of the specs for the Audiovox DS9341 9 inch swivel screen portable DVD player:

9 inch TFT display
Swivel screen – 270 degree rotation
4 hour playback
Internal rechargeable Li-polymer battery
16:9 aspect ratio

640 x 234 resolution

Built-in stereo speakers

3.5mm headphone jack

Audio/video output

Disc playback: DVD, CD, MP3, JPEG

AC adapter

DC car adapter

The swivel design of the screen makes the DVD player all the more versatile when compared with their non swivel counterparts. Does your child or teen want a TV in their bedroom or dorm room, but you don’t want to fork over the big bucks for a full size screen? This might be a good compromise.

The Audiovox DS9341 9 inch swivel screen portable DVD player has a very sleek look to the outside.  The inside is also well designed with easy to read buttons and settings.  The DVD cover door feels a little flimsy (thin plastic) so I cautioned Big Brother to open and shut the player with care, and not to take his “strapped in the car for too long” aggression out on the DVD player.

Unfortunately, as we began our trip and got the DVD player up and running we realized that, with the sound of the car tires doing 70 on the freeway, the boys couldn’t hear their movie—even on the DVD player’s highest volume level.  My patient 5 year old didn’t seem to mind.  He watched it “without sound” for another couple hours.

Once we got to our hotel I tested out the volume sans road noise.  I could hear the DVD just fine, but even with the player just a couple feet away from me I preferred the highest volume setting.  Next, I tried plugging headphones into the headphone jack.  Ahhh, now that was more like it! Headphones made the volume adequate for watching DVDs in the car with the road noise.

The Audiovox DS9341 9 inch swivel screen portable DVD player doesn’t come with headphones, but we’ll be purchasing some for it very soon.  If you are looking to purchase this DVD player for use in the car or on a plane, headphones will be essential.  The more noise cancelling the headphones are, the better.

You can purchase the Audiovox DS9341 9 inch swivel screen portable DVD player from Audiovox.com or from Amazon.com.
