When I got pregnant it was a given that we’d cloth diaper our new little one.  Like almost all cloth diapering parents will tell you, once you start cloth diapering, you love it!

What I didn’t know is if I’d cloth diaper our little one from birth.  While there are “one size” cloth diapers that are designed to fit babies 8-35 lbs, these diapers rarely fit bitty newborns very well.  With babies’ skinny legs and umbilical cord stumps, it is often difficult for parents to get a comfortable, leak-free fit for their babies.

Many cloth diaper manufacturers make XS or newborn size diapers.  And these diapers are super adorable!  But it can also be pricey to purchase a stash of diapers that your baby is only going to wear for 1-3 months.  That is why you’ll see many cloth diaper retail shops offer newborn cloth diaper rental options.

Earthy Crunchy Mama has been one of my favorite cloth diaper stores (actually, she sells a LOT more than just cloth diapers) for quite a while.  Jennifer, the owner, is wonderful! When she posted on the Earthy Crunchy Mama facebook page about starting a newborn diaper rental program my interest was piqued.  When she  started talking about pricing I knew I was in!  I don’t think I’d ever heard of a more reasonably priced newborn diaper rental program!

Here is how her newborn diaper rental works:

All Packages Include:

  • 24 New & Gently used newborn diapers
  • 24 Reusable Liners or 1 pack disposable liners
  • 3 Night / Nap Time Doublers
  • Detergent
  • Cloth Diaper Safe Rash Cream
  • Gently used Pail Liner
  • Gently used Wet Bag
  • Cloth Wipes
  • Water test strip (to test for hard or soft water)
  • Complete care instructions.
  • Free shipping to and from us, within the United States ($35 for Canadian Addresses).
  • At home pick up for your diapers when shipping back to us.
  • Email and phone support for the length of your rental and afterwords if you continue to cloth diaper.
There are 3 different tiers of diapers packages you can choose from.  Earthy Crunchy Mama offers the Prefold, Basic, and Premium diaper programs. You can choose whichever program you’d like. The program you chose affects your initial deposit, but not your monthly cost.

Monthly cost is broken down according to whether you choose to receive cash back or store credit on your deposit.  The monetary breakdown looks like this:

Store Credit Program:

$175 Upfront Costs ($25 Program Fee + $150 Deposit–Premium Rental)
-$25 (Program Fee is not refunded)
-$40 (2 months of rental at $20/month)
————
$110 Back in Store Credit

Cash Back Program:
$175 Upfront Costs ($25 Program Fee + $150 Deposit–Premium Rental)
-$25 (Program Fee is not refunded)
-$80 (2 months of rental at $40/month)
————
$70 Credited back to your credit card.

(These examples are based on the Premium Rental option. If you choose the Basic or Prefold options your upfront costs will be less.)

If you choose the store credit option your cost breaks down to just $32.50 per month!  And that includes detergent, cloth wipes, wet bag, shipping, and more!

To show true savings I did a comparison with the disposables I would use if I didn’t cloth diaper.  Huggies Pure and Natural on Amazon Subscribe and Save (the least expensive I could find) were $0.22 per diaper.  That puts you at $66.00 per month for disposables if you use 10 diapers per day. Keep in mind that I searched for the least expensive option.  My youngest pooped at every feeding so he went through 10-12 diapers a day for the first 2 months.  Even with this very conservative estimate you are going to save at least $33.50 per month with Earthy Crunchy Mama’s newborn cloth diaper rental program!  If you purchase diapers at a grocery store you’ll save about twice this amount!

Considering what you get, Earthy Crunchy Mama’s newborn cloth diaper rental is the least expensive diaper rental program I’ve seen.  Click here to visit the Earthy Crunchy Mama site for more information about the newborn diaper rental program.   If you have any questions just click on the “contact us” link on that page.  Jenn is great and will help you out with any of your questions!

Don’t forget to like Earthy Crunchy Mama on Facebook and on twitter to stay in the know about sales and events!

I know it is a few months yet, but I can’t wait to show off my little one in his newborn cloth diapers!

Disclosure: I received a discount on this program in exchange for my post.  Regardless of discount, all opinions are honest and are entirely my own.

  1. We love earthy crunchy mama!! Agree once you cloth diaper you never go back! A rental program is awesome!
  2. I so wanted to cloth diaper, but service was unavailable in our area when my boys were little! I bow at your awesomeness, and stand a cheer for all the Mommas who can and choose to cloth diaper! I am sharing this information with my cousin, as we were just talking about diaper services over the weekend. Thank you for sharing the great info!
    • Keep in mind that they don't wash the diapers for you, it is just rental of the diapers themselves. But, yes it is an awesome program and I'm sure your cousin would love to hear about it. :) Thanks so much for the comment Jenny!

I think it's great when stores offer this option. It definitely turns a lot of people on to using newborn cloth diapers. I like your comparison for how much $ you save. I was trying to explain to somebody the other day how much we save, but couldn't. We received tons of diapers with our first, and before we used them up, decided to use cloth, so I haven't had to purchase any disposables, so I wasn't even sure what they cost!
  4. This looks like a great package! I wish I would have done something like this rather than purchase a whole newborn stash. I had no idea what I would like so I bought a bit of everything and probably spent way more than I needed to.
  5. I'm so glad you did a cost breakdown! It's so overwhelming to look at the price of CD's sometimes! Thanks for calculating it out for us!
    • Haha, that is just how I work! I have a total cloth diaper vs. disposable diaper cost break down on this page https://ohsosavvymom.com/2010/08/the-compelling-reasons-i-chose-to-cloth-diaper/ It was my very first blog post on Oh So Savvy Mom. :)
  6. WOW! What an amazing deal! I wish I had known about this when I was pregnant with my baby girl! :) That is a ton of diapers.. And I love your breakdown for the cost. Great post!
  7. Colleen Maurina says
It is great that Earth Crunchy Mama offers newborn cloth diaper rental options. It is a perfect solution for that newborn age that goes so quickly! I like that they make it easy and convenient and of course cost effective.
  8. I didn't realize that newborn rentals were so cost effective. This is a great option! I have a couple of friends having babies soon and I will have to let them know about this.
  9. this is a great option since the nb diapers wont be used for very long! so glad they have this
  10. Suzi Satterfield says
This is a great option that I might have to gift to an expecting friend!
  11. kim johnson says
This is a great option for newborn diapers. my son was 5lbs and I wish I would have had newborn diapers since it was 3mths before he fit into his OS diapers
  12. There aren't any cloth diaper services around where i live (at least that i know of). I would have definitely considered this when my son was born. Good information - I'm going to look into it for next baby.
  13. Anne Sweden says
The newborn diaper rental program sounds great! I'm due in just 5 weeks!
  14. I've never thought about renting diapers.
  15. Bekah Kuczenski says
The newborn cloth diaper rental program sounds like a financially really smart decision :O) However, I am addicted to my cloth and would not be able to give it back after 2 months lol...
  16. I think it's just great that they offer a rental program. So helpful!
  17. Julie Ghrist says
I always suggest newborn rentals for parents I know having a baby that is interested in cloth. It is a great intro into cloth diapering as well as being financially practical, rather than buying all those diapers :)
  18. I wish I had known about the rental option when I was expecting my first. Thanks for the detailed cost breakdown. It was really helpful!
  19. I used newborn disposables with my first, but I am very interested in doing a rental program with my next baby. Cloth makes changing diapers so much more fun!
  20. I love the rental option. My lo was a premie and the os just didn't fit. It would have been nice to know of a place I could just rent newborn diapers for him
  21. Guinevere Sande says
I love the wide variety of products this store carries and I have bookmarked it to check it out further the next time I am looking for something cloth diaper related!
  22. I'm really intrigued by the rental option! I wouldn't know whether to sign up for store credit or cash back though, since I'd be using it as a trial of cloth diapering in general. Do you have to decide upfront?
    • No, you don't have to decide upfront so you'd be safe if for some reason you decided not to cloth diaper. Earthy crunchy mama does, however, have a lot in her store that is not cloth diaper related. She has really cute nursing tops and dresses, toys for babies and kids, and lots of other things. :)
  23. Wow that is one amazing price! Thank you for breaking down the costs and such too, that is always interesting to see.
  24. I love Earthy Crunchy Mama's newborn rental! Jennifer was fabulously helpful in getting me started with cloth diapering and helping me select the best diapers to try out as a newbie! She has been helpful with all other orders I have placed too! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
  25. I wish I had known about newborn rental packages before I had started cloth diapering. It would have given me the chance to see what brand of diapers and what kind of diapers I really liked before I bought a huge stash!
  26. Hannah Avery says
The savings of this program sounds great! I would probably get a Thirsties duo wrap and a boingo set and snappis if I won this giveaway. I am getting ready to cloth diaper my coming little one!
  27. This is an interesting option. I had never considered renting or using a cloth diaper service.
  28. Elizabeth - Water Rolls Uphill says
I never thought of renting cloth diapers. We change so frequently that we really do wear our diapers out! I can only imagine that it wouldn't count as "normal wear and tear". I love the idea though, what a great way to introduce more families to cloth with minimal total out of pocket costs.
  29. what a wonderful idea! saves people the scary investment, especially given how quickly the size would change :) LOVE THIS.
  30. Kristen Redman says
I like this idea. I have a whooooooooole bunch of Fuzzibunz PS mediums and lots of OS diapers and Size 2 Applecheeks, but I am desperately trying to figure out what to do about diapering this baby due in April. Seeing as he will be the last one, it would be silly for me to buy a bunch of newborn diapers....this is a great solution. Thanks for the information.
  31. Kristi Cartwrigh says
I wasn't aware of programs like this. I think this is a great idea! Thanks for sharing and reviewing this to get the word out. As a newbie to CDing, I am looking at all my options before my little one arrives next month. :)
  32. Rebecca R. says
I wish i had done a newborn rental program when i had my now 6 month old son. this looks great!
  33. I wish I had known about newborn rentals when my LO was born. It definitely would have saved uas some money. If we have another LO, we are definitely doing a rental.
  34. This seems to be a great money saving way to cloth diaper. I'm going to check into it.
  35. This is a really cool program! I had to use disposables for the first couple of months because they were free and that's all I could afford but if I had been able to this would have been a great way to do those first couple of months! It is very affordable.
  36. I wish I knew about this 4 months ago! The money and frustration we went through would have been wonderful to save. I will be bookmarking the webpage and definitely will be renting newborn diapers from here for our next baby.
  37. meegan whitford says
I didnt know about this but very neat idea
  38. Wow that is for sure the least expensive rental program with the most items that I have seen! If I have another I hope she is still offering this!!
  39. Debnmike moretti says
Jenn is one of the nicest Cd store owners out there!!!
  40. this is an amazing opportunity. the prices are extremely reasonable!!
  41. Thanks for the review! This looks great! It's amazing how much you get to rent, and how cheap it is! I agree, I think it would be hard to buy newborn CDs (especially if you're not sure how many children you're going to have). But this looks like a great option!
  42. Agreed! It's funny how much cloth diapering mamas can love it! Didn't expect to become one of them when we got started. :)
