Big Brother is in pre-K. I’m not a homeschooling mom, but I really don’t have a lot of faith that public schools will teach my children what I want them to know. What do I do? I send my child to school for social enrichment and so that he can experience things like storytime, recess, and the structure that being in a classroom teaches. Then I supplement at home.
Having a background in early childhood education has taught me to keep my eyes open for things I can use to teach my kids at home. I was recently contacted by Learning Resources about reviewing some of their new for 2012 products. I chose the Primary Science Mixture and Measure Set. I thought it looked like it would be fun for Big Brother to play with. We could surely come up with some great science experiments to conduct with this. Little did I know when I ordered it the multitude of concepts I’ll be able to teach my boys with this set.
The Primary Science Mixture and Measure set includes:
- Scale
- bowl
- 3 self-standing spoons
- 6 unique cup designs help young learners visualize equivalent quantities in different formats
- Activity Cards introduce children to measurement and guide them in making mystery goo, puffy paint, slime and more!
Here we are having our first lesson on weight.
We measured out equal amounts of water, dried beans, and cheerios and weighed them individually. Before weighing them I’d have Big Brother guess if he thought the item we were weighing weighed more, less, or the same as the item(s) previously weighed. It was really quite a simple lesson, but he had tons of fun and he learned a bit about: weight, estimation, greater than, less than, equal to, and volume.
Other skills that can be taught with the Mixture and Measure set include, but are not limited to: counting, measuring, conservation, addition, fractions, subtraction, cause and effect (as you teach various science, cooking, etc., projects).
I couldn’t be more pleased with the Primary Science Mixture and Measure Set. I love the activity cards it come with–they’ll be a big help on those days when I just plain lack creativity. The set is also made with kids in mind and is quite durable.
