Growing up, there were few things that signaled the coming Christmas holiday more pleasantly than our favorite Christmas movies.  Some of our favorite movies are now included in the The Original Christmas Classics boxed set.  I was so excited when I received one of these to review.  Big Brother just recently discovered Santa and Rudolph and I’m excited to enjoy the same classic holiday movies with him that I enjoyed with my family while i was growing up.

The cute and family-friendly box set contains four of the most beloved holiday TV specials of all time, including the Rankin/Bass classics “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “Frosty Returns.” Watching these iconic TV specials are part of the American holiday tradition, just like baking cookies or trimming the Christmas tree!  The holiday season just wouldn’t be the same without them…

Also included in the DVD version are:

  • Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol
  • The Little Drummer Boy
  • Cricket on the Hearth

If you’re looking for a more religious Christmas movie that the kids can enjoy we really liked Veggie Tales The Little Drummer Boy.  Veggie Tales is wonderful about teaching scripture stories while helping kids understand some of the messages behind those stories.

In this Veggie-version of a holiday classic, Junior Asparagus stars as The Little Drummer Boy, a lonely child who finds the true meaning of Christmas when he stumbles upon the birth of the baby Jesus. A story of generosity, hope and love, this timeless tale will warm the hearts of children everywhere!

Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary
  • “The Little Drummer Boy” Music Video
  • Sing-Along Songs—“The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas” and “Can’t Smile Without Ewe”
  • Behind the Music of “The Little Drummer Boy”
  • Visit a Drum Factory with Junior
  • Family Activity—Make Your Own Drum
  • Interactive Book Preview—Christmas Is Finally Here

One of the things I love about the Veggie Tales movies is that at the end of each one the characters talk about a principle they have learned.  In The Little Drummer Boy, through misunderstandings feelings are hurt and offense is taken.  At the end the characters have learned about forgiveness.  They talk about forgiving one another and the misunderstandings are cleared up.  Those lessons always spark teaching opportunities.

You can purchase the The Original Christmas Classics on DVD for (current price) $21.99, or purchase The Original Christmas Classics [Blu-ray] for (current price) $30.99.

Veggie Tales: Little Drummer Boy on DVD is only $11.99 from Amazon.com.
