Back to School shopping can be a busy and financially stressful time for parents.  In a recent poll done my Mom Central Consulting they found that 25% of moms waited til the last minute to do their back to school shopping.  I was one of those moms.

This was my first time doing back to school shopping for a child (I’ve done some back to school shopping for my husband before).  Because Big Brother is only in Pre-K he wasn’t demanding or at all particular about what kind of clothes he got.   Even though Big Brother hadn’t requested any new clothes for school, he is outgrowing his size 4 clothes and will need some size 5 clothes pretty soon.

My whole married life has been lived on a student income so I consider myself fairly expert in knowing the best stores to go for the best deals.  “Off-price” stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls are great because you can buy high quality (oftentimes designer) apparel at a fraction of the price you’d pay at a department store.  TJ Maxx and Marshalls buyers are “trend experts” who keep up with cutting-edged trends so we moms can have the latest trends at our fingertips.  No having to settle for last year’s styles.

When I went to Marshalls it was to buy a few specific things Big Brother was in need of: a button down shirt, jeans, and a pair of khakis.  As is often the case, I was underwhelmed by the selection of little boys clothes.  It is a rare store that has an adequate selection of little boys clothes.  They didn’t have any pants other than jeans and warm-up pants.  The only brand of button down shirt they had was Ralph Lauren.  That is great if you’re looking for a high end brand, but even at $16.99, it is more than I usually spend for a child’s shirt.

My favorite finds were the jeans I got for Big Brother.  I got a pair of Hurley Jeans, regularly priced at $35, for just $10!  I also bought a pair of Paper Denim & Cloth jeans, regularly priced at $62, for just $13! Score!
