Educational Insights carries a variety of products for students, parents, and teachers.  I have previously had opportunities to review some of their wonderful learning toys and games for kids.  This time around they sent me a pack of their Smens Pens.

Smens® are gourmet scented pens made from recycled newspapers. Available scents include Red Licorice, Creamsicle, Aloha, Mystery Scent, Banana FoFana, Mocha, Passion Fruit, Ninja Berry, Pink Lemonade, and Black Licorice. Each Smen is individually wrapped in a stay-fresh biodegradable plastic tube and is guaranteed to keep its scent for two years.

When I ordered the Smens Pens I was thinking they’d be a fun motivator for helping Big Brother want to draw and write.  He hates to draw and doesn’t like to color.  I thought that, despite the fact that they are pens, their yummy scents and fun colors would entice him to make wonderful creations.  I was a little surprised when I received the Smens to find out that they are not colored ink, but rather every pen is black ink.  Bummer.  The website didn’t specify the color of ink so I just assumed that each pen was the color of its pen cap.
Despite not being quite what I’d expected, I do love how fragrant these pens are.  I’m impressed at their eco-friendliness with recycled newspaper casing and biodegradable plastic storage tubes.  They write as well as any ball point pen.  As far as targeted consumers go, I think the Smens are best for older kids (6+), teens, teachers, and parents.

  1. These look awesome! My 5 year old loves colored pens and pencils. I'll have to see where I can get these! She goes through lots of gel pens, I absolutely know she would love these!
  2. Debbie Welchert says
I had a set of these too. My grandchildren loved them. When they got tired of one scent they would trade with each other for a different scent.
  3. Trasina McGahey says
I agree, they would have been better if they were colored but I love that they are made from recycled materials and I love things that small good!
