BabyKicks Joey-Bunz 3-Pack, MediumI love using the BabyKicks Joey-Bunz hemp cloth diaper inserts inside my gDiaper covers!  Of all the various components in my cloth diaper stash it’s the BabyKicks Joey-Bunz Hemp inserts that make cloth diapering soooo easy.  “The reason?”, you ask.  Well, the answer is very simple; ABSORBENCY.  All I have to say is “Wow!”   With disposable diapers you know when your kid is wet by the telltale yellowing or sagging of the diaper.  In a good cloth diaper it may not be so easy to tell.  I use a wet-check method of sliding my finger in between the gDiaper liner and the hemp insert on the bum area.  If the back is damp it’s time for a change.  Most cloth diapers need to be changed every 2-3 hours.  With a BabyKicks Joey-Bunz, Little Brother can go 4 hours (the insert isn’t always all the way saturated, but it really wouldn’t be nice to his little bum to leave him in his wet diaper for longer than this  = )!
Don’t even get me started on how great these are for nighttime.  When I first got these I thought I’d need a doubler on top of the BabyKicks Joey-Bunz to ensure there’d be no leakage.  Not the case!  Unless your kid is a super heavy wetter one Joey-Bunz is all you need for nighttime.
Now you may be thinking that in order to be this absorbent that insert is probably dang bulky.  Again, this is just not the case.  I folded a size medium Joey-Bunz and laid it next to a disposable diaper.  When pressed flat the diapers were equal thickness!
Why hemp? Hemp is super-absorbent, much more so than cotton and other commonly used cloth diaper fabrics.  Because I can’t put it any better or more concisely than the BabyKicks website, here is what they have to say about hemp:

“We use hemp because of its durability, absorbency, and it’s natural anti-microbial properties. This means your baby will be protected naturally from bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus.
Furthermore using hemp, instead of cotton, really is better for the environment. Hemp does not deplete the soil; in fact hemp leaves return nitrogen back to the soil, which improves soil fertility, therefore requiring less fertilizer for subsequent rotated crops.”

You want to know something else?  BabyKicks Joey-Bunz Hemparoos can be used in all sorts of cloth diapers.  They are designed for pocket diapers, but also work great in hybrids and in a wrap.

  1. Oh my, I have several hemparoo inserts and LOVE them!! I have yet to find another insert that I like better (and I have tried about 7 other kinds). So jealous you can cloth at night. I have yet to be able to do that without leakage :(. Oh well. Just one disposable in a 24 hour period isn't too bad.
